(For some reason, the “Download Now!” button is at the very bottom – I’ll see if I can change that at some point)
Ok, before you get too excited, I have to tell you that this is a prototype rather than a complete set.
What is it?
Well, in an earlier post, I waxed philosophical about how anime songs helped improve my Japanese language skills and how I’d like to help others do the same.
Here you’ll find the start of an Anki deck for each level of the JLPT – N5, N4, N3, N2, and N1. Each card seeks to engage you with both visual and audio cues. The focus is on vocabulary, but some grammar points have been added where possible, with the goal to provide a somewhat multi-dimensional context for remember the words/points.
For example, the word 誰か is an N5 word. It is used in a particularly memorable melodic phrase in the song “Sunshine” by Monkey Majik – the OP for Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan. As can be seen in the (admittedly terrible-looking) screenshots I tried to take, the front of the card shows the item in question, the line that it appears in, and a visual from the anime. You can’t see it, but the sound clip of the line from the song plays when the card appears. On the back, the hiragana and English are provided, along with a translation of the line – again, to try to provide additional contextual understanding.
The photos may reappear – honestly, they were just to add some pizzazz to the cards so they wouldn’t be so boring to look at.
The cards – when possible, applicable, and most likely to be effective – will have three different versions. This means there is one card that shows the word in kanji asking for the reading and the meaning, one card that shows the word in hiragana asking for the kanji and the meaning, and one card in English asking for the kanji/hiragana and its reading.
Please download this and try it out. If you like it, tell others about it – and just as importantly, tell me about it! I need to know if I should keep building this or not (it’s a pretty time-consuming project). Also, if you notice any mistakes or have any suggestions for improvement, I would be thrilled to hear them.
